District 9 Baseball and Softball:

FRIDAY-BASEBALL

D9 Central League Championship GameDuBois Central Catholic 7, DuBois 1The Cardinals scored four runs in the first inning, and it was all they would need as DuBois Central Catholic claimed the first-ever District 9 Central League baseball championship Friday with a 7-1 win over the DuBois Beavers. Carter Himes had a big game on the mound and at the plate for DCC. He pitched six innings, and gave up only one run on four hits, and he struck out 10 DuBois batters. Himes also smacked three hits and drove in one Cardinals run.

The District 9 baseball playoffs begin this week.

D9 Central League Championship GamePunxsutawney 1, DuBois Central Catholic 0The lone run of the game came in the top of the seventh inning, and the Lady Chucks nipped the Lady Cardinals in the very first D9 Central League softball championship Friday, 1-0. Punxsy’s Lindee Reed hit an inside-the-park home run to tally the winning run

Curwensville 11, Glendale 1 – Addison Siple pitched a two-hitter and struck out 15 for Curwensville, and she matched her Lady Tide teammate Addison Warren with three hits in the game.

The District 9 softball playoffs begin this week.

Pittsburgh Pirates:

The Pittsburgh Pirates had a lousy weekend at home against cross-state rival Philadelphia. The Phillies swept the three-game series beating the Bucs 11-9 on Friday, 6-0 on Saturday, and 6-0 again on Sunday.

The Pirates head to St. Louis for a three-game series against the Cardinals. Tuesday’s game begins at 7:45pm. Listen for the pre-game show on Connect FM Tuesday at 7:20.

Altoona Curve:

The Pirates’ Double-A affiliate Altoona Curve took two of three games against the Harrisburg Senators over the weekend. Friday night, the Curve knocked off the Senators, 8-3. Altoona then beat Harrisburg, 6-5 on Saturday, but then lost the series finale on Sunday, 8-3. The Curve host the Erie Sea Wolves for a six-game series starting Tuesday night at PNG Field.
