UNDATED – Pennsylvania lawmakers remain divided over how to rewrite the state’s second-degree murder sentencing law after the state Supreme Court ruled mandatory life without parole is unconstitutional.
State Representative Mike Armanini says that House Democrats changed the bill to expand parole opportunities, leaving judges and prosecutors to decide how to handle cases for now.
“Now it sits because it’s back in the Senate and now it’s in the hands of judges and district attorneys on how they’re going to incorporate this until we can get this resolved,” explained Armanini
Armanini argued that the changes could affect victims’ families and public safety, while lawmakers continue working on a final sentencing law.
