CLEARFIELD – Multiple people spoke out at the Clearfield County Commissioners meeting Tuesday, raising concerts about the conditions inside the Moshannon Valley ICE Processing Center.
Speakers, 11 in total, alleged detainees are facing inhumane conditions, including poor quality food and limited medical care.
Some cited conversations with former inmates, while others shared stories involving detained family members, calling the system broken and pushing for the contract not to be renewed and the facility shut down.
All three Commissioners, including those who are publicly opposed to the center, say that the facility is federally run and they have no authority to shut it down, but their current agreement allows for communication with the facility.
“So many of these stories grow legs of their own and become much larger than they started out,” explained Commissioner Tim Winters. “And that does take our time to address these things.”
They also disputed reports of a recent hunger strike, calling it a “non-event”, and are confident those held inside are receiving proper care.
