District 9 / PIAA Baseball and Softball Playoffs:

Only one District 9 team will play in the semifinal round of the PIAA baseball and softball playoffs. That team is the Clarion Bobcats in Class A baseball.

On Thursday, Clarion smacked 14 hits and scored 15 runs enroute to a 15-5 win over Greensburg Central Catholic. The Bobcats will play Eden Christian in the state semifinals on Monday.

In Class 2A baseball, Redbank Valley lost 7-6 in eight innings to Freedom. The Bulldogs’ 10-game win streak also comes to an end.

In the Class A PIAA softball playoffs, the DuBois Central Catholic Lady Cardinals could manage only two hits, and fell to Union Area of New Castle, 8-0.

and, the St. Marys Lady Dutch came up short in the Class 3A softball playoffs falling to Bald Eagle Area, 4-1, at Heindl Field in DuBois.

Pittsburgh Pirates:

The Pittsburgh Pirates and Houston Astros waited through a long rain delay last night, and then Houston beat the Bucs, 8-2.

Tonight, the Pirates welcome the Phillies to PNC Park for a weekend series. The first pitch of game one is scheduled for 6:40 tonight. Tune in for the Pirates-Phillies pregame show on Connect FM this evening at 6:15.

Altoona Curve:

The Pittsburgh Pirates’ Double-A affiliate Altoona Curve suffered their third-straight shutout loss in New Hampshire. Altoona fell to the Fisher Cats, 2-0, last night. Game four of the Curve’s Eastern League series in New Hampshire is scheduled to start at 6:35 this evening.

Pittsburgh Penguins:

The Pittsburgh Penguins have a new head coach…42-year old Dan Muse. Muse has 20 years of hockey coaching experience, including five in the NHL as an assistant with the New York Rangers and Nashville Predators. Muse also has an NCAA National Championship under his coaching belt when he lead the Yale Bulldogs to the top in 2013.
