COOPER TOWNSHIP – A Smithmill man will spend up to seven years in prison after pleading guilty to a 2024 DUI crash that killed a retired priest.

We previously reported that 24 year-old Nathaniel Beers was driving an ATV while under the influence when he struck and killed retired priest 81 year-old Robert Humenay.

Beers has now entered an open plea, pleading guilty to felony homicide by vehicle and DUI.

With an open plea, the defence and prosecutors could not agree to a minimum sentence, leaving it up to the Judge. Beers now faces a minimum of nine months and a maximum of seven years behind bars.
