UNDATED – As DuBois prepares to install a new roundabout, state officials say these features have proven to be a safer, more efficient alternative to intersections.
As Roundabout Coordinator for Pennsylvania, Nina Ertel says, since Pennsylvania began implementing roundabouts in 2005 crash rates have dropped around seven percent and fatal accidents declined by 80 percent while increasing traffic flow.
“As a vehicle approaches a roundabout, it slows down,“ explained Ertel. “It yields to the traffic in the circulatory roadway. Usually it is around 30 percent additional vehicles can get through the roundabout.”
She also noted that roundabouts can enhance the appearance of the community and, once drivers adapt to the new pattern, become a welcome addition to the community.
