CLEARFIELD – A Clearfield County man has been sentenced to serve as many as 12 years in state prison for assaulting a one-year-old child.

According to court documents, 26-year-old Dontae Thomas pleaded guilty to aggravated and simple assault as well as child endangerment.

Police say the young boy was found face down in a bath tub with multiple injuries and bruises last February. Thomas had been entrusted with watching the child at a Chester Hill residence. A doctor at UPMC Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh testified that the injuries to the boy were near-fatal, and were diagnostic of abuse.

During this week’s court proceedings, the child’s mother asked Judge Paul Cherry to give Thomas the maximum sentence. In addition to the six to 12-year prison term, Cherry also sentenced Thomas to one year of probation, an order to complete anger management counseling, and to have no unsupervised contact with anyone under the age of 16.
