WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Tri-County area’s U.S. Representative Glenn “GT” Thompson has co-introduced a bill in Congress that would help schools purchase fresh agricultural products from local farms.
The Local Foods for Healthy Schools Act, if made a law, will provide funding to states to purchase farm products locally to serve in school cafeterias and childcare facilities. The proposed program would give students greater access to fresh, healthy food and beverages, such as milk and juice, while supporting local producers and economies.
Thompson said his bill would create “a partnership between local producers and school districts, expanding markets for local farmers and making it easier for schools, especially in rural communities, to serve foods that provide the vital nutrients students need to succeed in the classroom.”
The Pennsylvania Farm Bureau and Feeding Pennsylvania have endorsed Thompson’s proposal.
