District 9 Softball Playoffs:
WEDNESDAY – SOFTBALL
4A Subregional Championship – Punxsutawney 9, Somerset (D 5) 1 – Lindee Reed, Ally Manners, and Brinley Hallman each belted a home run for the Lady Chucks. Reed finished the game 4-for-4 at the plate with four Punxsy runs batted in. Makenna Gula was the winning pitcher for the Lady Chucks. She gave up only one hit and one unearned run while striking out 12. Punxsutawney will play either Elizabeth Forward or Blackhawk Monday in the first round of the PIAA playoffs.
3A Subregional Championship – Hickory (D 10) 6, St. Marys 1;
PIAA Baseball and Softball Playoffs:
5A Baseball — The DuBois Beavers will play either Montour or Thomas Jefferson on Monday.
1A Baseball – The Crusaders of Elk County Catholic will take on Western Beaver or Serra Catholic in the first round of the PIAA playoffs.
5A Softball – The DuBois Lady Beavers will face either Shaler or North Hills.
1A Softball – DuBois Central Catholic will play either Claysburg-Kimmel or Juniata Valley of District 6 on Monday.
2A Softball – Brockway will face either Brentworth or Neshannock in the first round of the PIAA playoffs.
Pittsburgh Pirates:
The Pittsburgh Pirates fell to the Chicago Cubs last night, 10-4.
The Bucs and Cubs wrap up their four-game series at PNC Park tonight. The first pitch is scheduled again for 6:40. Don’t miss the Pirates pregame show this evening on Connect FM at 6:15.
Altoona Curve:
The Pirates’ Double-A affiliate Altoona Curve notched a 7-6 win in Hartford, Connecticut last night. Altoona faces the Yard Goats again tonight. It’s game three of a six-game Eastern League set with the first pitch scheduled for 7:10.
Pittsburgh Penguins:
Geno is staying in Pittsburgh. The Pittsburgh Penguins announced this week they have re-signed Evgeni Malkin to a one-year contract extension. The single year deal is valued at more than $5-million, and runs through the 2026-27 season. Malkin has played all 20 of his NHL seasons with the Pens. He ranks in the top three in Penguins history for goals, game-winning goals, assists, and games played.
