District 9 Baseball and Softball Playoffs:
MONDAY (Memorial Day) – BASEBALL
D9 1A Championship: Elk County Catholic 5, Clarion 2 – Matthew Gilmore earned the pitching win for the Crusaders, and he drove in three of ECC’s five runs. Elk County Catholic heads into the PIAA playoffs next week and will face either Western Beaver or Serra Catholic in the first round.
D9 4A Subregional Championship: Somerset (D 5) 6, Clearfield 5;
5A Subregional Championship: DuBois 9, Meadville (D 10) 2 – The Beavers scored all nine of their runs in the first four innings. Madix Clark drove in three of the DuBois runs. In the first round of the PIAA playoffs next week, the Beavers will take on either Montour or Thomas Jefferson from the WPIAL.
MONDAY (Memorial Day) – SOFTBALL
D9 1A Championship: DuBois Central Catholic 1, Curwensville 0 – The Lady Cardinals advance into the PIAA playoffs and will play either Claysburg-Kimmel or Juniata Valley of District 6 next Monday.
D9 2A Championship: Brockway 10, Cranberry 7 – The Lady Rovers won a District 9 championship for the first time in 24 years. Brockway’s Ella Reitz was 4-for-4 at the plate with four RBI, and teammate Elysabeth Myers was 3-for-3 including a double and a triple. The Lady Rovers will face a WPIAL opponent when the PIAA playoffs begin next week.
D9 3A Championship: St. Marys 9, Karns City 7 – It is the fourth straight District 9 title for the Lady Dutch. St. Marys has a Subregional game against Hickory of District 10 on Wednesday.
D9 4A Championship: Punxsutawney 13, Clearfield 8 – The Lady Chucks advance to the Subregional Championship game Wednesday against District 5 champ Somerset.
Pittsburgh Pirates:
The Pittsburgh Pirates won a 2-1 decision over the Chicago Cubs on Monday. The Pirates will battle the Cubs again tonight at PNC Park. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:40. Tune in for the Pirates pregame show this evening on Connect FM at 6:15.
Altoona Curve:
The Pirates’ Double-A affiliate Altoona Curve are coming off an Eastern League series win over the Erie Sea Wolves, four games to two. Tonight, Altoona plays in Connecticut, starting a six-game series with the Hartford Yard Goats. The first pitch of tonight’s game is scheduled for 7:10pm.
