Brookville Students Turn Compassion Into Action

BROOKVILLE – A student led effort in Brookville is turning small acts of kindness into big community impact.

Inspired by the story of Rachel Joy Scott, a teenage girl killed in the Columbine High School massacre, the district’s K-12 club Friends of Rachel focuses on compassion through service.

Elementary School Counselor Kristen Drake says that since becoming official in 2018, students have organized free movie nights, helped the Salvation Army,  created care packages for nursing home residents, and actively support classmates in need.

“They watch the kids do this on their own and take it and own it and just feel compelled to want to be the person that’s demonstrating that compassion and kindness,” Drake said.

Ultimately this group works to promote cheers and spirit throughout not only the school but the whole community.
