ELK COUNTY – Work is underway to try to bring more elk back to the main viewing area around the Elk County Visitor Center.
State Representative Mike Armanini held a public meeting last week after hearing concerns from residents and businesses that visitors are not seeing as many elk in popular viewing areas.
Armanini says that experts with the Pennsylvania Game Commission believe it largely comes down to food sources.
“They’re gonna go where they want. They’re gonna go where the best food is available for them,” explained Armanini.
Moving forward, officials say planting new vegetation this spring could help draw more elk back to the area.
However, it could take several years before any major change is seen.
