Reworking DuBois’ Budget

DUBOIS – City of DuBois lawmakers relooked at the municipalities’ budget, looking to make cuts to lower the tax rate.

Council members discussed options ranging from department cuts to delay nonessential spending, with some members suggesting long term revenue sources through economic growth initiatives, leasing natural gas drilling rights, or shifting funds from timber sales.

With proposals ranging from dropping the tax rate from 13.75 mills to between 13 and 12.75, management warned the city has virtually no revenue left and lowering the tax rate could leave no financial cushion.

“I sent an email to all of the department heads so we can sit down and go through their departments line by line, and see what their needs and wants are,“ explained Interim Manager Lisa Hagberg.

Now management will have to review all suggestions and return with a revised budget next Wednesday with a possible second meeting on Monday the 19th.
