DUBOIS – Wessel & Company has presented the City of DuBois’ 2023 regular audit, focusing on balancing accounts instead of identifying illegalities.

This audit was delayed months due to high staff turnover, but showed that the city earned top rankings in almost every category, a good sign for City Manager Lisa Hagberg.

“I think that they did a very thorough job of looking into all elements of the city,“ explained Hagberg. “And I’m excited to work with them on the 2024 and get that behind us as well, so as we jump into the new city we have all the data that we need.”

In the end, the audit firm believes the city can improve by switching to accrual accounting to align with neighboring agencies, smooth out financial inconsistencies, and improve the grouping of revenue and expenditures. They also urged the city to plan finances years in advance.

City leaders confirmed that the forensic audit remains “stalled” as law enforcement holds key documents that were seized during the investigation of former City Manager John “Herm” Suplizio.
