Revolutionizing Waste Management in Pa

DUBOIS – You may think that garbage collection ends on the curb, however major waves are coming through the garbage collection business, revolutionizing the industry.

In Pittsburgh, approximately $23 million dollars was used to upgrade a recycling facility, modernizing the plant to quickly and efficiently separate materials.

For Waste Management Senior District Manager Ed Yahner, these changes are changing the sanitation business for the better.

“Now much of the sorting that we do by material type is all done with optical sorters,“ explained Yahner. “It actually looks at the shape of the material, and if it’s magnetic or not, and it actually separates those materials into the right commodity so we have a much better product.”

Yahner also told us that another aspect of revolutionizing Waste Management is through the trackable trucks, similar to a package delivery, you can track where your garbage truck is and estimated time until they take care of your trash.
