DUBOIS – The DuBois City Council voted 4-1 against a proposed commercial rate increase by Waste Management Monday night.
Previously representatives from the facility proposed a seven percent increase, or two installments of five percent increases over two years for commercial services, stating that the price increase was needed for the longevity of the company.
Before the vote councilmember Jen Jackson asked about the current difference between the city rates and Sandy Township’s, which Manager Shawn Arbaugh said the Township’s was much lower.
Jackson then proposed to decline their proposal. All members were in favor except for Councilman Shane Dietz, who believed there should have been more discussion.
“An increase is warranted, at least to some extent,” explained Councilman Deitz. “Especially thinking about the people in the community, we’re talking about our friends and family that work for Waste Management that live right here in DuBois with us. So I guess my thought was maybe it would have been better to come back with a counter rather than just shut it down.”
