Muriel “Mel” Braunns, 87, of Punxsutawney, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, July 11, 2026.
She was born in Punxsutawney on December 17, 1938, a daughter of the late Roland Adair McGee and Opal (Fuller) McGee. She was lovingly raised by her grandmother, Sara “Senie” M. McGee. Her uncle, Harry James McGee, sent his money home to his mother “Senie” from the war to help support them.
On August 16, 1958, she married James Harry Braunns, Sr., they enjoyed fifty-nine years of marriage prior to his death on September 08, 2017.
She was Methodist by faith.
Mel was an incredible wife and mother. She devoted her life to raising five boys, embracing the joys and challenges of motherhood with unwavering love, patience and strength. Her home was filled with laughter, encouragement, unconditional love, and she taught her sons the values of kindness, honesty, respect and hard work through both her words and example.
Outside the home, she had a heart for those who were often forgotten, bringing joy and comfort wherever she went. She regularly visited nursing home, sharing her beautiful voice as she sang familiar hymns and cherished songs. She wrote many Christmas cards and letters to the residents reminding each person they were loved and remembered.
In her free time, she enjoyed being with her family, watching westerns on television, singing, going for rides in the woods on the side by side and watching the birds.
She is survived by five sons, James H. (Joyce) Braunns, Jr. of Johnstown, Timothy Braunns of Mahaffey, Lorne (Crystal Pearce) Braunns of Punxsutawney, Henry Braunns of Punxsutawney and Shannon (Amanda) Braunns of DuBois; several grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Preceded in death by her grandmother, husband, and one sister, June States.
Arrangements are private and under the direction of Shumaker Funeral Home, Inc., Punxsutawney.
Interment will be at Pearce Cemetery.
