Harry Tost
1935-2026
December 3, 1935 – June 8, 2026
Harry Tost, 90, of Scranton, PA (formerly of DuBois), died June 8, 2026. Born to the late William and Maribel Tost in Reynoldsville, Harry was a proud Army veteran. He worked tirelessly for decades to provide for his family, earning the affectionate nickname "Uncle Harry" at work.
He married Beverly (Gulish) Tost on September 8, 1956. They enjoyed nearly 46 years of marriage until her death on August 22, 2002. He was also preceded in death by two young children, Jeffrey and Jodi. Harry honored their memories every year by planting hundreds of flowers on their graves and placing wreaths for Christmas. Despite great loss in his life, Harry considered himself a very blessed man and, in turn, he was a blessing to everyone he loved.
In Scranton, Harry was famously known as "the scooter guy." Flying an American flag on his scooter, everyone from grocery clerks to college kids knew him as he rode all over town. He loved scooter trips to Boscov’s to buy surprise gifts for his family—leaving his grandkids always guessing whether he’d show up with heated gloves, a snowscraper, a snack, or Christmas decorations.
Harry was the ultimate jokester, king of dad jokes, and loved asking waitresses for a "left-handed knife." He spent hours playing Pinochle in his garage with neighbors, and later, Rummy with his grandkids. He loved hot weather, but he happily froze in ice rinks for hours to watch his grandkids play hockey. He cheered them on at every dance recital and sport, though baseball was his favorite. His grandchildren cherish the memory of Grandpa meeting them each day at the bus stop to walk them home, always with his scooter basket full of snacks. He was happiest fueled by potato chips, peanut butter cookies (Bev’s recipe), and peanut butter fudge.
Harry was a member of St. John Neumann Church, Scranton, the Disabled American Veterans, Knights of Columbus, Reynoldsville Eagles, and the American Legion.
He is survived by his son, Lance Tost (Karen) of Scranton, and six grandchildren: Kaytlen Fogelsong (Andrew), Ethan, Bridget, Dylan, Ella, and Owen Tost.
He was preceded in death by siblings Agnes (Sue Doverspike) Sherwood, Paul Doverspike, Ray Tost, and Ted Tost; and his in-laws, Michael and Helen Gulish.
