George Russell Bedell
1945-2025

George Russell Bedell, 80, of Big Run, passed away unexpectedly at home on Monday, November 24, 2025.

He was born in Punxsutawney on July 26, 1945, the son of the late Calvin C. Bedell and Frances (Anderson) Bedell.

On April 3, 1965, he married Roberta “Robbie” Jean Ecelbarger.  She survives and resides in Big Run.

He was a member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles #1231, Punxsutawney.

Mr. Bedell last worked for Greenland Construction in Clearfield. His career was utility construction which spanned highways, sewage and water systems.

He effectively operated the local sewage system the Big Run Area Municipal Authority for over twenty-five years. He was also a current Big Run Borough Council man, who dedicated his knowledge, time and experience to Big Run.

George was a true workhorse, the kind of man who thrived on long days and late nights, pouring himself into every task with unwavering dedication. He rarely paused to rest and never took a vacation, insisting that keeping busy was what brought him the most joy.

Although he loved to work, nothing compared to being “Papa” to his grandkids.  With them, he could slow down, set his work aside and enjoy their laughter, stories and simple moments.  It was proof that even someone who loved working could love his family even more.

In addition to his wife Robbie, he is survived by three children, George R. (Susan) Bedell of Big Run, David E. (Vicki) Bedell of Punxsutawney and Julie A. (Jeff Hoffman) Burkett of Punxsutawney; four grandchildren, George Bedell, David C. Bedell, Natalie Burkett and Olivia (Ethan Curry) Burkett; four great grandchildren, Chloe, Silas, Emma and Owen Bedell; two brothers, John (Joyce) Bedell and Robert (Vicki) Bedell, all of Little Valley, New York; two sisters, Patricia Smith of Punxsutawney and Deborah (Mark) Hammond of Stewart, Florida.

Preceded in death by his parents, an infant daughter, Frances Jean Bedell; one son, Michael Bedell; two brothers, Calvin James “Jim” Bedell and Terry Bedell.

In accordance with his wishes, there will be no visitation.  Arrangements entrusted to Shumaker Funeral Home, Inc., Big Run.

Memorial donations may be made in George’s memory to the Big Run Area Volunteer Fire Company.
