CLEARFIELD — As rifle deer season hits full stride in Pennsylvania, more and more hunters in the Tri-County area are giving back to the community through the “Hunters Sharing the Harvest” program.

For nearly a decade, The Country Butcher in Woodland and Clearfield has participated in the program by processing locally-harvested and donated deer, and giving it to churches, food banks, and those in need. Owner of The County Butcher, Jason Gill, said it’s important that there has been an increase in donations over the years since “every year that goes by, more and more people need it.” Gill notes that it’s easy to donate deer meat. All that you need to do is drop it off at The Country Butcher and fill out a few papers.

According to information provided by “Hunters Sharing the Harvest,” one average-sized deer can provide enough meat for 200 meals. Over two million pounds of meat has been processed and distributed through the program since 1991.
