St. Marys Police warn of Mystery Shopper scam

Saint Marys, PA – Police in Saint Marys are warning of a Mystery Shopper scam that you might see in your mailbox.

This specific report was from Friday, sent to a resident on Margaret Street in Saint Marys, but it’s a common nationwide scam that could affect anyone.

The victim had been sent a package, via mail, regarding a mystery shopper opportunity. There was a check for $1,490.00 and a letter with directions to deposit it and how and where to transfer it.

This fraud specifically involved the “Mystery Shopper Representative Research,” “Shopper’s Care,” and “Western Union.”

The City of Saint Marys Police would like the public to be aware of this incident and be aware of similar scams regarding job opportunities.

Following these tips can help you avoid a mystery shopping scam:

  • Do your research – ensure the service or company is legitimate
  • Never wire money to someone you don’t know
  • Never agree to deposit a check from someone you don’t know
