Somerset County, PA – In south central-west PA, the Somerset County District Attorney has been taken into custody on charges related to sexual assault and rape.

36-year-old Jeffery Thomas from Windber allegedly assaulted a woman in her home on Saturday. His lawyer reminds the public that these are allegations and, like anyone charged with a crime, he is entitled to due process, fairness, and the presumption of innocence unless proven guilty.

Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro released a statement, saying:
“The charges this defendant is facing for a violent attack are deeply disturbing. Mr. Thomas is entrusted by the public to uphold the law and serve as a voice for victims. I commend the bravery of the victim that has come forward — that is never an easy thing to do, especially when your abuser is a powerful elected official. Today is a reminder that no one is above the law.”

Thomas is facing charges of facing charges of rape, indecent assault, strangulation, simple assault, and criminal trespass.

He is currently being held in Cambria County Prison on $5,000 bail. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for Sept. 29.
