Second vaccine dose for Brockway school staff, parent concerns about snow days

Brockway, PA – A parent came to the Brockway Area School District board meeting Tuesday to discuss the district’s use of flexible instructional days for snow days.

The district has the opportunity to use the system set up for online teaching for COVID to continue instruction during snow days. Students get on Google Classroom and their teachers link in through Google Meet to teach the class. Jesse Vivian has a nine-year-old in the district and he said that he felt like the district was adding a burden to parents when they did not need to, adding helping with schoolwork on a day that has bad weather. Vizza said that the school is still working out the bugs with flexible instructional days, and if a survey to parents is necessary to gauge their feelings about using those days, the district will send one out.

The Class of 2021 will graduate at Varischetti Field instead of in the high school auditorium. The district set commencement ceremonies for May 28, with a time to be determined later. The district also approved its 2021-2022 school calendar, with the first day of school scheduled for August 25.

The district is redoing some floors in 11 elementary classrooms. Jefferson Paving Corporation will also pave over 10,000 square feet in the parking lot during the summer. The district will pick up 300 Chromebooks for the next school year using money from the CARES Act.

Superintendent Jeff Vizza continued to praise the community for the way it is working on COVID vaccinations. The second round of vaccines is coming up at the end of the week.

The school board will meet again April 13 at 7 p.m. in the elementary gymnasium.
