Sandy Township residents, supervisors discuss consolidation status

SANDY TWP. – Continue to move forward with consolidation, or not? That was the big topic of discussion Monday night at the Sandy Township Supervisors meeting. The meeting was moved to the Oklahoma Fire Hall to accommodate a town hall style forum.

Township Manager Shawn Arbaugh provided an update on last year’s lawsuit which intends to pause the consolidation process of the township and City of DuBois …

More than 1,200 Sandy residents signed a petition requesting that consolidation be paused until legal matters involving Herm Suplizio are settled, and a forensic audit is completed.

The supervisors were asked to indicate if they felt comfortable with moving forward with consolidation at this point …four of them said they did (Abbott, Sullivan, Mollica and Whitaker), and one of them (Beers) said he did not feel comfortable.

Other questions and concerns that came up involved the number of fire companies, zoning, taxes, roads, law enforcement, and emergency services once the two municipalities have consolidated.

By a 4-1 vote, Jason Runyon was appointed the new Sandy Township Fire Chief; and by a 3-2 vote, John Uren was selected as the township’s Assistant Fire Chief.
