Rockton woman loses $1,000 in “Texas Drug Enforcement” scam

Union Township, PA – Yet another scam involving gift cards. This time, a 42-year-old Rockton woman was called by someone claiming to be from Texas Drug Enforcement saying that her bank account and social security number would be frozen due to drug warrants.

She was told to buy two $500 Best Buy gift cards to prove that her bank account info wasn’t the same as what they had on file.

She did so and provided the scammers with the numbers on the back of the cards, losing the $1,000.

Police are urging you once again to never give person or financial information to anyone you don’t know, especially if they are calling you claiming that you won something or, like in this case, threatening you.

No legitimate company or organization will ever ask you to pay specifically in gift cards. They ask for gift cards because they are difficult to trace, and it’s a sure sign of a scam.
