Punxsutawney, PA – Punxsutawney Phil will still be making his traditional prediction this upcoming Groundhog Day, but there won’t be any visitors to watch the event in-person.
Instead, the Groundhog Club has decided to hold the prognostication virtually on Feb. 2, 2021.
The broadcast will be shown on TV, given to media outlets, and streamed online.
More virtual activities and celebrations will be announced on the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club website.
The President of the Groundhog Club, Jeffrey Lundy, even spoke with Punxsutawney Phil to make sure that they were making the right decision. Phil reportedly said, in Groundhogese, that he thought doing the event virtually was a great idea and he was looking forward to appearing virtually this year to help keep everyone safe.

Press Release
Punxsutawney Groundhog Club
Gobbler’s Knob, Punxsutawney Pennsylvania.
November 17. 2021
In early fall this year the Inner Circle of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club formed a Special Committee to monitor the Covid pandemic and stay ahead of our options for Groundhog Day. We have been in continuing contact with health officials and those providing guidance. The health and safety of our faithful followers and everyone associated with Phil’s prognostication has been our number one priority.
Today we announce that Phil, along with the Inner Circle, will be making his live annual Prognostication from Gobbler’s Knob this coming Groundhog Day February 2nd 2021, but it has been determined that there will not be any in person attendance or guests on the grounds as the potential Covid risks to overcome are too great.
We will continue to update the media and Phil’s followers as to viewing the live ceremony and prognostication via broadcasting and on all outlets, including television and Internet and live steaming.
We are developing numerous live internet, website and virtual events and interactions that will take the place of the traditional in person events. Information regarding these virtual events will be listed and on our website: www.groundhog.org. We want to assure Phil’s fans that even though the 2021 celebration will look different, the Inner Circle is excited to develop numerous virtual events and new opportunities to celebrate Groundhog Day.
It is very unlikely, but it if it is determined that we can logistically and safety hold any in person activities related to Groundhog Day, we will make that information available if developed.
The guests who come to Gobbler’s Knob in Punxsutawney each February from around the world are a key component to making Groundhog Day so special. We look forward to the day when we can welcome back all our guests and faithful followers, hopefully in February of 2022.
Stay safe Groundhoggers!
