Population Decline Projected for Jefferson County

BROOKVILLE – The population of Jefferson County is projected to decline approximately five percent over the next 30 years.

That was the estimate provided by the Center for Rural Pennsylvania in Brookville this week. The group presented a population projection for the Brookville Area Chamber of Commerce. According to the center’s data, deaths have outpaced births in Jefferson County every year since 1996. The decrease in population is creating a problem in the form of a loss of money for the county, according to Brookville Chamber President and Brookville Manager, Dana Rooney.

As Rooney noted, “States give out money based on your population, and it puts you in different pools of funding opportunities.”
