Phone Scam Costs Curwensville Woman $36,000

CURWENSVILLE – State Police are investigating a phone scam which cost an elderly Curwensville woman more than $36,000.

The victim reportedly received a phone call Monday morning from someone claiming to be her daughter. The suspected scammer was crying, and told the woman she had been arrested following a traffic accident, and needed bail money. The victim was also told by the scammers that an infant passenger in the other vehicle died in the crash, and additional funds were required so that her daughter could be released.

When the victim drove to the Clearfield County Courthouse to check on her daughter, she discovered the entire situation was a scam.

The total amount stolen from the victim is $36,500.
