New study reveals Jefferson County has the highest imprisonment rate in PA

Jefferson County – Results of a recent study show that Jefferson County has the highest rate of imprisonment in the state, and widespread opioid addiction and abuse seems to be a driving factor.

A study by the Prison Policy Initiative and the Public Interest Law Center indicates that Jefferson County’s imprisonment rate is 392 per 100,000 residents, a rate almost twice the state average of about 200 residents per 100,000.

Jefferson County and other rural counties in the western part of Pennsylvania have high poverty rates and face high rates of opioid use.

The study also concludes that those who use opioids illegally face a heightened risk for arrest and incarceration.
