Legislation to Improve Railway Safety

UNDATED – Two bills introduced aim to improve railroad safety in the Commonwealth.

House Bill 540 would require at least an engineer and conductor on each train engine.

House Bill 539, if implemented, would limit the length of trains to 8,500 feet.

If both bills pass, they would allow the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission to fine rail companies who do not comply with the legislation.
