Kephart challenges automatic salary increases

HARRISBURG – Pennsylvania’s elected officials receive automatic pay raises, but Clearfield County State Representative Dallas Kephart doesn’t think they should.

Kephart tried to offer an amendment to a piece of legislation in Harrisburg last week that would have required legislators to vote on their annual salary increases. Kephart’s attempt to end the automatic cost-of-living adjustment with an amendment was blocked in the House chamber by Democratic Speaker of the House Joanna McClinton. It didn’t receive consideration, debate, or a vote.

Kephart said, My proposal isn’t popular with some in Harrisburg, but holding politicians accountable is the right thing to do.” Kephart added. “The good people we represent aren’t getting automatic raises,, and must deal with increased expenses caused by inflation. Giving yourself a pay raise without accountability is not acceptable.”
