PUNXSUTAWNEY – A Jefferson County woman is facing fraud charges after she allegedly received nearly $1,000 in state food assistance based on a false income report.

Pennsylvania’s Office of State Inspector General filed the charges this week against 46-year-old Irene Smith of Punxsutawney.

According to court documents, Smith is accused of not reporting the income she received from Social Security for her child when she applied for food stamp assistance.

Jefferson County caseworkers have determined that Smith received a total of $918 in fraudulent benefits between June and September 2022.

Smith’s preliminary hearing is scheduled for October 11th.
