PUNXSUTAWNEY – A Jefferson County man has been charged with attempted homicide following the Monday night shooting in Punxsutawney in which two people were wounded.

According to court documents, 22-year-old Matthew Brotherton of Punxsutawney is awaiting a preliminary hearing on charges of attempted homicide, aggravated assault, and burglary.

Punxsutawney Police say Brotherton broke into a Woodland Avenue residence to seek out a 27-year-old unnamed man. Brotherton allegedly experienced a “failed relationship” with a female who lived in that home.

As Brotherton confronted and was fighting with the victim, he reportedly pulled a gun and shot the other man twice, in the abdomen and leg. Police say the victim was then able to retrieve a gun from a nearby bedroom, and he fired it at Brotherton.

The victim received medical attention at Penn Highlands DuBois, and Brotherton was treated for his wounds at Punxsutawney Hospital.
