Groundhog Day is right around the corner, but how accurate is Punxsutawney Phil?

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Groundhog Day is less than a week away when the attention of America and the world will turn to Punxsutawney and the famous forecasting rodent, Phil.

Have you wondered about Punxsutawney Phil’s accuracy in predicting the final six weeks of the winter season?

The Punxsutawney Groundhog Club will confidently tell you that Phil is never wrong.

But the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is putting the groundhog’s success rate in foretelling the weather at about 40 percent.

In case you are wondering, Punxsutawney Phil has predicted early spring weather 20 times since 1887 while calling for six more weeks of winter 107 times.

The tradition continues next Thursday, February 2nd at 7:25am, when Meteorologist Hall of Famer Phil will emerge from his stump at Gobbler’s Knob to predict whether wintry weather will end early this year.
