Grampian woman pleads guilty in infant’s death

Grampian, PA – A Grampian woman has pleaded guilty to charges related the death of a baby girl in July 2020, though the death itself has been ruled as accidental.

23-year-old Alexa Kephart pleaded guilty to a felony charge of endangering the welfare of children and a misdemeanor charge involuntary manslaughter.

Her sentencing will happen within the next 60 days.

The other caretaker, Dakota Canfield, will likely also face charges of endangering the welfare of children and recklessly endangering another person.

The death dates back to July 1, 2020 when Kephart and Canfield had been living in a home along Stronach Road in Penn Township with their infant daughter and another child that was nearly 2 years old.

Police say that the couple has in the habit of sleeping with their infant in the same full-size bed with them.

When they woke up the morning of July 1, they reportedly found the infant covered in a blanket, unconscious and blue.

Kephart attempted CPR and life saving measures until emergency services arrived, but the infant was pronounced dead at the hospital a short time later.

Although the death has been ruled as accidental, police note that Kephart and Canfield both had a history of using methamphetamine, both before and after the child was born.

CYS was actively involved with the family ever since the child’s birth.
