Grampian, PA – A Grampian couple faces charges in the death of a baby girl in early July, though the death has been ruled as accidental.
22-year-old Alexa Kephart is charged with involuntary manslaughter, endangering the welfare of children, and recklessly endangering another person.
23-year-old Dakota Canfield, the other caregiver for the child, also faces charges of endangering the welfare of children and recklessly endangering another person.
The death dates back to July 1 when Kephart and Canfield had been living in a home along Stronach Road in Penn Township with their infant daughter and another child that was nearly 2 years old.
Police say that the couple has in the habit of sleeping with their infant in the same full-size bed with them.
When they woke up the morning of July 1, they reportedly found the infant covered in a blanket, unconscious and blue.
Kephart attempted CPR and life saving measures until emergency services arrived, but the infant was pronounced dead at the hospital a short time later.
Although the death has been ruled as accidental, police note that Kephart and Canfield both had a history of using methamphetamine, both before and after the child was born.
CYS was actively involved with the family ever since the child’s birth.
There’s no word yet on when their hearings will be held.
