DuBois, PA – Randy Schmidt, the former mayor of the City of DuBois, was charged with receiving stolen property and retail theft by taking merchandise.

He was charged on March 2 for the theft.

The crime reportedly happened at the Brady Street Sheetz store in DuBois on 17 different occasions, totaling about $80 of theft.

According to police documents, Schmidt would order made-to-order food and pay for it. However, he allegedly would pick up other food items while waiting for his order, with no intention of paying for those other items.

Schmidt is currently awaiting his preliminary hearing on Oct. 9.

Randy Schmidt recently resigned from his position as DuBois City Mayor, citing that he wanted to slow down and spend more time with his family. He did not make any public statements about the theft allegations.

Ed Walsh is serving as the interim mayor. Shannon Gabriel, the former controller of Dubois City Council, has stepped into Walsh’s seat on council.

For the municipal election in 2021, many DuBois City Council seats will be on the ballot. This includes the remaining two years for the mayor’s term, the remaining two years for Walsh’s council seat (now held by Gabriel), the remaining two years of Shane Dietz’ term (who is serving in Schmidt’s previous council seat after Schmidt had been sworn in as mayor), and the full 4-year term of the seat currently held by Jim Aughenbaugh. Because Gabriel had to leave her position as controller, the two remaining years of the controller’s term will also be on the ballot in 2021. The council will likely name a new controller at the next meeting, Sept. 14.

According to the affidavit of probable cause, these items were listed as being stolen by Schmidt:
