Firefighter’s Stance on Municipal Fire Study

DuBois/Sandy Township – Firefighters in DuBois and Sandy Township are united in their stance against the consolidated fire study done by DCED, agreeing to some points, but opposing others.

DuBois Fire Chief John Kelsey represented all DuBois and Sandy Township departments saying they all agree to several elements of the study, including unifying under one banner and using a centralized chain of command.

They all agree however, that the study did not effectively look at the interdynamics of the detailed history of our area’s fire departments, ultimately agreeing that the station’s should not merge into one fire department,

“This approach would erode the sense of identity, pride, and ownership that motivates volunteers,“ explained Chief Kelsey. “These qualities are essential to maintaining engagement, moral, and long term service within a volunteer based fire department.”

It was also suggested that the Fire Subcommittee reports directly to the Joint Board on plans and recommendations on staff and financial needs while keeping the fire service model to protect everyone.
