Firefighters contain Elk County wildfire

MILLSTONE TWP. – The wildfire in Elk County, named the “River Road Wildfire” by the U.S. Forest Service, was reported to be 100 percent contained by late Sunday.

Flames had originally broke out and spread on private land and in the Allegheny National Forest in Millstone Township on Wednesday afternoon.

The wildfire at its peak measured as large as 447 acres.

The cause of the wildfire is under investigation.

No houses or buildings were destroyed or threatened, and no evacuations became necessary.

The Sigel Volunteer Fire Department Chief David Smith said 28 volunteer fire departments from five counties spent almost three days battling the blaze.

A Forest Service spokesman said that crews will continue mopping up and monitoring the burn area for smoke.
