DUBOIS – At the DuBois Area School Board work session meeting Thursday night, the discussion commenced on the use of the titles of Valedictorian and Salutatorian at the High School.

According to Superintendent Wendy Benton, there are many reasons behind the history of the district refraining from the use of titles of Valedictorian and Salutatorian including economic advantages.

Hear Benton discuss the advantages of students that are in a better financial situation:

During the presentation, Benton also discussed the ability of students to walk at graduation even if they did not quite reach graduation requirements.

Board member Robert Wachob said, “It kind of falls onto the everyone gets a participation trophy world that we appear to live in anymore. The reality in this world is that if you work and succeed, you are rewarded. They can work and succeed and be awarded with a diploma, but I don’t believe they should be rewarded with walking across the stage.”

These topics will be revisited and voted upon during the next voting session meeting next Thursday, June 15.
