DUBOIS – A special program on the life and writings of a DuBois area legend will be presented this evening.

The DuBois Area Historical Society is hosting “M.I. McCreight In His Own Words” at 7 this evening in the society’s newly-renovated meeting room along West Long Avenue. Tom Schott, author of the book “Major: The Life of Israel McCreight,” is presenting the program, which is free and open to the public.

Major Israel McCreight was born in Reynoldsville in 1865. After spending his formative years in a wilderness area, McCreight ultimately became one of the developers of the City of DuBois through his banking career with Deposit Bank, and his involvement with many other community interests. His DuBois home, “The Wigwam,” became a destination for famous visitors. But McCreight always said he felt his greatest achievement was becoming a chief of the Sioux Indians.
