DUBOIS – After months of deliberation, the 2025 election process for the freshly consolidated DuBois’ city council has been set in stone.
Between February 18th and March 11th potential candidates will turn in signed petitions advocating their run for office.
Afterwards a primary election will determine the seven ballot spots with a maximum of seven from each party.
Due to state law, the top five candidates will have four-year terms with the bottom two getting two-year terms.
Legal review also showed that state law mandates that the new Mayor must be selected from within, and will not be on the ballot.
To qualify to run you must be 18 or older, have lived within the Consolidated City of DuBois for twelve months prior to the elections, registered to vote, and cannot be a Pennsylvania officer except for militias or notaries.
Meanwhile, one of the City’s Managers, Lisa Hagberg, told us that besides the legal qualifications, a candidate should possess other qualities.
“They need to care about the community, that is probably a number one,“ explained Hagberg. “It would be nice if they had a little bit of knowledge of the legislative side, and how to create law, and how you enforce it.”
When asked which current members would be running for re-election, Mark Sullivan, Pat Reasinger, Sam Mollica, Dick Whitaker, and Barry Abbott all said they were rerunning. Jim Aughenbaugh, Elliot Gelfand, Shane Dietz, and Bill Beers were all undecided. Jen Jackson said she was not rerunning.
