DEP to Review Controversial Trash Transfer Station

BROCKWAY – Tempers flared as hundreds packed into a public meeting to challenge a proposed trash transfer facility in Snyder Township.

If approved, the site would receive up to two trains per week, each with up to 30 rail cars loaded with sealed containers of trash that would then be loaded onto trucks and shipped to the Greentree landfill.

Residents packed the Brockwayville Depot Center Thursday night, demanding answers about truck traffic, potential smells, environmental impact, and what it could mean for the character of their community.

Noble Environmental, the company behind the proposal, pushed back, saying the containers are sealed and inspected, with no expected smells or contamination. They claimed traffic would rise just two percent and the facility could bring 18–25 local jobs.

When asked, representatives from Noble Environmental declined to comment

Now, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection will review all public comments before making a decision in a process that is expected to take between six to nine months.
