Removing Fluoride From DuBois Water

DUBOIS – City of DuBois officials are beginning a months long process that could end the addition of fluoride to the city’s water supply.

This controversial plan argued that fluoride should not be added to drinking water when you could obtain it through other means.

To make the change, the city must pursue a permit modification with the state Department of Environmental Protection, this multi month process will include notifying DEP, public hearings, and a final council approval before the change is implemented.

It’s a hazardous chemical for us to deal with,” explained Kaffelin. “We have to permit it, we have to have special training on how to deal with it and that kind of thing. And so not working around a hazardous material is an advantage to our employees. And also there is a modest cost, it’s not tens of thousands of dollars, but it’s thousands of dollars that we spend every year on buying the fluoride.“

This is expected to take around six months, with public hearings likely in the spring.
