Commonwealth Court Halts Interstate Bridge Tolls

Clarion, PA -Local business and civic leaders are responding positively to last week’s decision by the Commonwealth Court to halt PennDOT’s idea to toll nine interstate bridges, including one on Interstate 80 in Jefferson County.

Tracy Becker, Executive Director of the Clarion Area Chamber of Business & Industry said, “The business community in Clarion County is thrilled to see the Commonwealth Court void the P3 Bridge Tolling plan. This initiative would have been a drain on our local economy and have negative effects on economic development across northwestern PA.”

The court ruled that PennDOT was in clear violation of the Public-Private Partnerships law when it voted to approve the tolling of the bridges before it considered the project’s scope, framework, and impact on citizens. There’s no word yet on whether PennDOT will appeal the ruling to the state Supreme Court.

The North Fork bridge near Brookville was targeted for tolls under the P3 Initiative.
