Coal Mining Plans Discussed

PENFIELD – A lengthy discussion was had between over one hundred local residents and representatives with Rosebud Mining Company regarding their plans to expand their coal operations from their Penfield mine all the way into Treasure Lake.

While this project is currently in the evaluation phase, the mining company wanted to answer as many questions as possible at this time.

Questions arose over water quality and how the process is completed. Rosebud, which operates 16 deep mines since 1979, reassured the community that their work is industry standard and that they would take all responsibility if an incident occurred.

Environmental assessments are currently underway, but specifics about the possible mine are unclear, as surveys of the 5,000 acres are done.

We heard from Nathan Benton, who helped organize the meeting, who believes the discussion went well.

“I’m really happy that Rosebud came out here and addressed everyone’s concerns at this point and time,“ explained Benton. “And I would like to thank the crowd for cooking out and talking to Rosebud.”

This project is still in the early phases and will be at least three to five years until Rosebud Mining Company can get a permit, and another three to five years until mining begins
