Harrisburg, PA – A deer positive for Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) in Jefferson County has led to new regulations on reducing the Disease, the expansion of Disease Management Area 3 (DMA 3), and the creation of a new DMA (DMA 6).
The Pennsylvania Game Commission announced that a recently found road-killed deer in the northernmost portion of DMA 3 tested positive for CWD as part of their ongoing CWD surveillance efforts.
Due to the deer being found within two miles of Pennsylvania’s elk management area, DMA 6 was created to prevent high-risk parts of the DMA 3 populace from moving into the elk management area.
CWD is fatal to any deer or elk who becomes infected with it and there is no known treatment or cure. It can affect deer, elk, or any other member of the deer family.
When a new CWD-positive is detected in either a wild or captive deer or elk in Pennsylvania, a new DMA is established. DMAs are created to reduce risk of human-assisted spread of CWD.
