Bike2Build: 500-mile journey for Habitat for Humanity starts today

Clearfield, PA – A journey of 500 miles starts today as 79-year-old John Farr from Habitat for Humanity sets out to bike through Central PA to raise money for building houses here in our community.

Applicants are chosen based on whether the home being built would make sense for The family put in much more than the 500 required volunteer hours to build their house, called “sweat equity” hours, as part of the agreement for becoming the proud new homeowners.

It’s a common misconception that this is a free home for families… Habitat for Humanity calls it a hand up, not a hand out. The family will still have a mortgage, although it’s interest-free, and the organization works to make sure it’s reasonable and affordable.

Last year John Farr raised $18,000, and he’s hoping to do better than that this year. That’s about ¼ the cost of building a Habitat for humanity home.

You can follow his journey and, more importantly, pledge your donation at Bike2Build.org.

This upcoming Friday, Sept. 18, John will be riding down Liberty Boulevard to the DuBois City Park at 6 p.m.. Come help celebrate!
