Benezette Township, PA – An Elk County woman was scammed out of more than $8,000 when someone lied and said her son had been in an accident.

The 78-year-old woman from Benezette told police that someone told her on May 3 that her son had been in an accident and was being held until someone could pay $8,300 to release him.

The woman, who was concerned about her son, paid the cash to the person and lost the money to the scam.

This is a common but particularly nasty scam because it preys on someone’s love for their family members. If someone calls and claims that someone has been injured or imprisoned and you need to pay money, be suspicious. Hang up and call that family member personally to verify that they’re okay.
