DUBOIS – An area girl has been pursuing her athletic aspirations through roller derby, facing off against teams as far away as Australia.
Laken Dodd goes out to Pittsburgh weekly to participate in roller derby, a fast paced contact sport that has teams of eight racing and blocking each other on an oval track.
In her time on the track she has traveled as far as Nebraska, facing off against multiple teams from across the country and some international teams from places like France and Australia.
For Laken, once roller derby fell off locally she went to Pittsburgh to pursue her passion.
“Pretty much we started by playing hockey,“ explained Dodd. “And then it kind of trickled into derby whenever our friends asked about it and it kind of took off from there. I enjoy it a lot. I don’t know what I’d do without it.”
She also told us that she loves to ice skate, and wants to begin practicing horseback riding.
Her team has placed 6th in the junior rankings but believes they can take 1st place
